Haiti earthquake rattles UNCW student

The earthquake that’s rocked hundreds of thousands in Haiti has also affected a UNCW student. Chris Searle has visited Haiti twice, and he says it’s going to take a lot of work to get Haiti and its people back on their feet.

Searle, a junior at the university, volunteered his time to the people of Haiti through his church. The pre-med student said his time in the country was life-changing, as he spent it working in a medical camp. Searle said the need for medical attention was critical.

During his time, he made many relationships with haitians and says he tries to keep in contact via Facebook as much as he can. He says their chances of getting on the internet are slim, and that it’ll now be even longer until he hears back from them, If ever.

“Disheartening going down there, and at the same time it’s very… their culture is still upbeat,” Searle said. “Like they still have a good look on life. But with this tragedy, it’s just gonna be even more sad.”

Searle wasn’t planning on going to Haiti any time soon, but he says he’s going to rework his schedule to hopefully get down there in February if possible. Searle says the country has always needed help, and it’s unfortunate it took a tragedy like this to prompt such a massive response. He hopes people recognize Haiti’s need for money and medical help.
