Census opens office, brings jobs

Body

New jobs are making their way to Wilmington courtesy of Uncle Sam and your tax dollars. Its all part of the US Census, a count of each and every American that happens every ten years. It’s a process that’s more important than many of us might think.

This morning marked the grand opening of the local census office, which is bringing nearly 2,000 jobs to Wilmington. The temporary staff will be working the phones and going door to door to ensure that every person in our six-county area is counted. At the ribbon cutting ceremony local leaders welcomed the jobs, but also stressed the importance of an accurate population count.

“All of our social services and things like that, a lot of them are based on population,” New Hanover County Commission Chair Jason Thompson said. “So if we have a population, the official census population of 100,000, but we really have 130,000 people here, we’re shorting ourselves on federal dollars. It’s vital that everybody gets counted, because everybody’s vote counts.”

Participation in the 2000 Census was not good with only 60 percent of New Hanover County residents reporting. When you receive your census survey in late March you’ll find that it’s shorter than in years past. With only ten questions, it’s the shortest census in history.

If you’d like to apply for a position you can call the census bureau at (866) 861-2010 or log on to http://www.2010censusjobs.gov
