Victims of Eugenics Board seek compensation

A half-century ago, at the urging of state officials, Lela Dunston’s ability to have children ended in an instant with an operation in Wilmington.Fifty years later, Dunston, now 63 years old and living in Raleigh, is one of many victims of the N.C. Eugenics Board seeking compensation from the state for condoning a program that sterilized thousands of state residents – men, woman, girls and boys – during the 20th century.
