Perdue asks for federal disaster declaration
RALEIGH, NC (AP) — North Carolina Gov. Bev Perdue is asking for a federal disaster declaration for seven coastal counties that suffered severe damage during Hurricane Irene.
The declaration would mean homeowners and business owners could get help cleaning up and repairing damaged property.
Perdue is asking for assistance in Beaufort, Carteret, Craven, Dare, Hyde, Pamlico and Tyrrell counties. She says more counties may be added as emergency management teams continue to assess damage across the eastern third of North Carolina.
The federal government already approved an emergency declaration in 34 counties that gave local governments federal money to help them prepare before Hurricane Irene struck Saturday.
