One dead, another in custody after overnight shooting in Rocky Point
PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — One man is dead and another is in custody after an overnight shooting in Rocky Point.
It happened around 10:30 p.m. on Brighton Road in the Summit Ridge neighborhood. The Pender County Sheriff’s Office says when deputies arrived at the home of Michael Grant the 34-year-old fired a gun at the deputies. They fired back hitting Grant in the leg. He then barricaded himself in his home. That’s when deputies noticed the body of Grant’s neighbor lying in the backyard.
The victim has been identified as 42-year-old Anthony Wayne Edens, Sr.
Around 1:30 a.m. deputies were able to get inside the home, but Grant had then barricaded himself in a bedroom with the gun. After nearly four hours of negotiations investigators were able to get Grant in custody after firing a bean bag round. He was was quickly taken to the hospital and is now suspected of murder.
The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting, which is standard protocol whenever there is an officer-involved shooting.
