“Lee” now a rainstorm, “Katia” stronger far at sea

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)- After some great weather to start Labor Day weekend, our focus turns to the tropics as we head into the first week of September.

"Lee" is no longer tropical, and is simply a large area of low pressure centered over the Deep South. This will send widespread scattered heavy thunderstorms toward the Carolinas as it heads northeastward through midweek. This will be good news as it pertains to Hurricane Katia.

Katia has strengthened over the course of the weekend, and is now a strong hurricane. The storm is expected to maintain its strength, or even strengthen into a major hurricane, as it continues to the northwest through Wednesday.

From there, it is becoming increasingly more likely that Katia will get picked up in the broad southerly flow over the East Coast created by "Lee" and begin to turn due north. This will keep the heart of the storm well offshore of the Carolinas – with its closest approach Thursday. Right now, the system is expected to turn out to sea and miss the US completely. We’ll keep you updated as to any track changes.

Even though we aren’t expecting any wind or rain from Katia, the system is still a powerful hurricane. This means that dangerous, life-threatening rip currents and high surf are possible beginning today. Please don’t attempt to swim in these conditions.

Remember, September 10 marks the peak of Atlantic Hurricane Season. You can always see the latest tropical updates at Hurricanes 101.
