“Lee” to bring rain to the Carolinas, Category 4 “Katia” to remain offshore

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)- After a beautiful weekend of weather, the chance of rain returns to North Carolina this week. Former Tropical Storm Lee has weakened and merged with a cold front near the Gulf Coast. The combined system will bring torrential rains and widespread flooding to western North Carolina, and the possibility of a major severe weather outbreak. The "center" of former Tropical Storm Lee will pass near the Tennessee/North Carolina border later this week.

The eastern half of the state (including our area) will be a little farther away from the heaviest rain with "Lee". However, we will still see a good chance of intermittent heavy showers anytime through Wednesday, and even a slight chance of isolated tornadoes.

Ironically, the unsettled weather associated with "Lee" will act as a shield to protect us from Category 4 Hurricane Katia. Most major computer models keep Katia offshore, without any landfall along the United States coast. Still, Katia will produce above-average surf and a high risk of rip currents for our beaches as she passes offshore.

You can always see the latest tropical updates at Hurricanes 101.
