Former Bladen Schools chief, fire marshal among public workers indicted

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Former Bladen County Schools Superintendent Greg Killingsworth is among a group of former public employees in Bladen County indicted by a grand jury for financial crimes. The District Attorney’s office says the grand jury returned the indictments Tuesday.

Killingsworth, 59, is charged with one count of obtaining property by false pretense on July 15, 2010. Killingsworth retired from his job during a school board meeting October 1, 2010. Killingsworth handwrote his resignation during the meeting and did not offer any public explanation for his decision.

The grand jury also indicted former Bladen County Fire Marshal Mitchell Byrd. He is accused of 25 counts of obtaining property by false pretense. The alleged crimes happened between November 14, 2005, and March 3, 2009, according to the DA’s office.

“At the District Attorney’s Office we feel that it is vital to hold public servants accountable for their
behavior,” DA Jon David said in a statement. “No one is above the law, particularly those of us who have been entrusted with the public’s confidence. As a team, we are committed to seeking justice in these types of cases. I would like to thank the Grand Jurors for their work on these matters.”

The indictments also include Sandra A. Baldwin, a former counselor for Bladen County Vocational Rehabilitation Services. She is accused of 17 counts of Obtaining Property by False Pretense between August 3, 2009, and June 24, 2010.

Kelly Ard Smith, former Vice President of Finance for Bladen Community College, was indicted on two counts of Obtaining Property by False Pretense between July 1, 2010, and December 31, 2010.
