NC beach sees unusual jump in stingray strikes

COROLLA, NC (AP) — Ocean rescue workers along one Outer Banks beach say swimmers have suffered an unusual number of injuries from stingrays that lurk in the sand below their feet.

The Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk, VA, reports that during one week last month there were at least two injuries each day from stingrays, something that Corolla rescue chief Sylvia Wolff says generally occurs fewer than five times a year.

Wolff says Corolla Ocean Rescue reported 238 major medical incidents from June through August, with about a third of those resulting from stingrays.

Stingrays strike back when they’re stepped on by swimmers. Their tail is armed with a poisonous barb, which can break off in the flesh.

Other North Carolina beaches have not reported an increase in stingray stings.
