NC program aimed at removing litter from highways

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — The state of North Carolina is launching a new program to rid some of its busiest highways of trash.

The state Department of Transportation said Monday that it has lined up two private companies to provide Sponsor-a-Highway services along two interstate highways.

Businesses, organizations and individuals can pay to sponsor one-mile segments of road which will be cleaned of litter by the companies’ employees.

The entirety of Interstate 95 will be included in the program along with the portion of Interstate 40 that runs from the Orange-Durham county line to New Hanover County.

All of the money for the project will come from contracts with sponsors, rather than with tax dollars. Similar Sponsor-a-Highway programs currently operate in at least 19 other states.
