Awards presented to Wilmington police officer of the year, firefighter of the year
Wilmington, NC (WWAY)– The Wilmington police officer and firefighter of the year were named at Tuesday’s Wilmington City Council meeting.
These public servants were nominated for the awards by their peers.
Daniel Searle-Spratt, an investigator from the Wilmington Police Department, took home the award for police officer of the year. He received the accolade after handling several large investigations in the past year.
“It feels very good,” says Searle-Spratt. “I am very honored to have received this from the VFW. It was very unexpected, had no idea that it was coming until I was informed I was receiving the award. Of course the award ceremony tonight was fantastic.”
Fireman William Verreen was honored as the City’s top firefighter, in part because of his involvement in the community.
“It feels awesome,” says Verreen. “I wasn’t expecting it at all, but I feel great.”
Both men also made reference to the people they work with, saying they appreciate them and could not have done it without them.
