Public hearings to be held this week on Titan’s draft air permit

CASTLE HAYNE, NC (WWAY) — The N.C. Division of Air Quality issued a draft air permit to Titan last month. Now they’re looking to the public to help them decide whether to alter it or deny Titan the permit altogether.

Three public hearings will be held this week to discuss the permit, which would regulate how much pollutants Titan will be allowed to emit.

“We’d like for the division of Air Quality to take a hard look at this permit and realize that it’s not the right thing for Southeastern North Carolina,” said Kemp Burdett, who is a part of the Stop Titan movement. “We’re going to make the point that we don’t think the plant is safe for the community. We’re going to say if you look at what this plant is going to put out into the air, it’s not going to be good for people.”

Burdett says it’s important for people to make their voices heard.

“Are we going to speak up about this big polluting industry that is really not going to be good for the community, or are we just going to let it happen,” asked Burdett.

Tom Radewicz, with the Castle Hayne Steering Committee, says he understands Stop Titan’s point of view, but believes that the DAQ will make right decision for the community when deciding whether to issue the permit.

“What I think doesn’t count,” said Radewicz. “I’m not an expert. I’m not a geologist or scientist, nor are they, so in the end we all have to rely on the same people we were going to rely on in the very beginning.”

Two public hearing will be held this September 27, one from 3p.m. to 5 p.m. and another from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Both will be at the McKeithan Center on the North Campus of Cape Fear Community College.

The third hearing will be held from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sept. 29 in the Kenan Auditorium at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, 601 S. College Road.
