Elon to hold services for Jewish high holy days
ELON, NC (AP) — Elon University will observe the Jewish High
Holy Days with services for the first time.
The Times-News of Burlington reported reported that a rabbi from
New York will lead services for the holy
days, which begin Wednesday with Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish new year
and end Oct. 8 with Yom Kippur, the day of atonement.
Hillel campus director Nancy Luberhoff says Elon has about 350
to 400 students who consider themselves Jewish and about 20 Jewish
faculty and staff members. She says Alamance County has no
synagogue so Hillel is the only Jewish institution there.
Hillel provides support for Jewish students on campuses.
Previously, students traveled to synagogues in Greensboro or to
the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for services.
