Farming is a way of life for Atkinson man
If someone asked George Highsmith if he’s been farming for a long time, he can certainly respond with “yes.” As a teenager, he remembers growing watermelons and cantaloupes and knowing he always wanted to be a farmer. And now, at 93, Highsmith is still farming. Although he no longer farms full time, he still plants a large garden each year and remains active on his farm in the Atkinson area.Highsmith was one of the first students to attend the Atkinson School when it opened in 1924. Later, after serving in the Army’s 94th Infantry in Europe during World War II, Highsmith returned to Pender County.
