NC drivers looking for handbook may be out of luck

CHARLOTTE, NC (AP) — Some North Carolina residents looking for help in cramming for the state driver’s test may be out of luck.

The Charlotte Observer reports that the state Division of Motor Vehicles is running out of copies of the Driver’s Handbook. It’s online, but at 116 pages, many people feel it’s too long to print.

DMV spokeswoman Marge Howell says the whole state is affected, but it’s not clear how many offices have run out of copies. The agency expects a new printing by next year.

North Carolina has no plans to follow South Carolina’s example in charging for the handbooks, though.

South Carolina was distributing more than 11,000 copies a month until July, when it started charging $5 per handbook. That number has dropped to just over 4,000.
