Elizabethtown sets Halloween revelry rules

ELIZABETHTOWN, NC (WWAY) — Halloween is less than a month away, and one Bladen County town is ready for the all the ghouls and goblins. Elizabethtown is so ready, that this week the town passed an ordinance setting the times for trick-or-treating.

Earlier this week the town council passed a resolution that set not only the time trick-or-treaters may be out, but also set the time that teenagers can’t be out. Kids between the ages of 13 and 18 will not be allowed out on the streets from 11 p.m. on Halloween until 6 a.m. on Nov. 1.

Councilman Ricky Leinwand says the resolution is intended to keep everyone safe. As someone who was born and raised in Elizabethtown Leinwand also hinted at the type of mischief a kid can get into on Halloween.

“Well, I can’t go into detail, but I got into some trouble in my youth days,” Leinwand said.

What’s surprising about this resolution is that it is nothing new. Mayor Sylvia Campbell says Elizabethtown has set the designated the trick-or-treat and curfew times for the past several years. She says residents like the resolution, because it dedicates a period of time for their little ghosts and goulies.

“We’re just urging everybody to be real careful as they go out and to be mindful of these children on the street,” Mayor Campbell said. “We’re looking forward to a big halloween this year.”

The town did not say what would happen to anyone who breaks the rules on Halloween. Maybe they’ll be fined a few pieces of candy.
