Family mourns NC firefighter who died in marathon
GREENSBORO, NC (AP) — Family members and colleagues are mourning the loss of a Greensboro firefighter who died while running the Chicago marathon.
Capt. William Caviness collapsed about 500 yards from the race’s finish line Sunday. Paramedics were able to get his heart beating again, but he was pronounced dead at a hospital.
Bill Britt said Monday his son-in-law was a wonderful husband and father who seemed to be in excellent physical health. Britt says Caviness would occasionally run the 18 miles or so between his home and the fire station where he worked.
Caviness’s union local says he was running to raise money for a charity that helps burn victims. A statement from the union says Caviness was a leader in the fire department.
