Trask Coliseum makeover winds down as scoreboard goes up
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — With Midnight Madness just days away, the extreme gym makeover at UNCW is almost complete.
Basketball practice starts Friday night with its annual showcase. By then, the overhead scoreboard will be raised, and Trask Coliseum will look more like an arena than a construction site.
Until then, it is all hands on deck.
New scoreboards at each endzone, seats with backs along one side of the court and LED displays along the scorer’s table highlight the upgrades. At this point, about 95 percent of the project is complete.
“We’re just very thankful for what (Athletics Director) Jimmy Bass and the administration has done to decorate it and make it look a lot nicer,” men’s basketball coach Buzz Peterson said. “Hopefully it will give us a big home court advantage.”
Midnight Madness begins Friday at 9:30 p.m. The first exhibition at Trask is October 29 as the Seahawks host St. Andrews. The regular season debut is November 22 against Marshall.
