City schedules meeting on downtown sign rules

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — In the wake of public outcry over an ordinance restricting signs at downtown businesses, the City of Wilmington has called a public meeting.

Business owners say they’re only now finding out about the regulations passed in 2008 as the city starts enforcement. The city admitted it dropped the ball in adequately notifying businesses.

The meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 27, 6-8 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at City Hall.

A news release from City Manager Sterling Cheatham says the city is asking for help and input to improve downtown sign regulations. The public is invited.

The release says anyone interested is encouraged to attend to:
·Increase your understanding of the city’s policy regarding signs and fliers in windows;
·Discuss and provide input about alternatives to the city’s policy regarding signs and flyers in windows;
·Help identify ways the city can better communicate with downtown stakeholders in the future.

For more information about the city’s sign regulations or the upcoming meeting, call (910) 342-2782 or e-mail brian.chambers@wilmingtonnc.gov.
