UNCW designated bicycle-friendly campus

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The effort to go green is paying off at UNC Wilmington. The university is just one of 26 in the nation to be designated a “Bicycle Friendly University.”

Drive through campus, and you will notice one thing right away: Bicycles. Or rather the sheer number of them.

“When I first got my schedule and saw where my classes were and realized I’d have ten minutes, I couldn’t walk it. I decided I’d get a bike,” UNCW freshman Erica Vann.

Vann is certainly not alone. Friday morning there was a steady stream of bicyclists parking at the bike racks outside of classroom buildings.

Now UNCW is being honored for its commitment to promoting bikes and skateboarding on campus. The League of American Bicyclists has named the school a “Bicycle Friendly Unviersity.”

“I’m really excited about it,” UNCW Environmental Health Director Stan Harts said. “I think this continues to show our commitment to alternative transportation, bicycles, pedestrians and skateboard travel on campus, and we’re also putting out some of the information as far as safe use of that travel, basically being safe and responsible as you travel by bike and skateboard.”

Out of the 13,00 students who attend UNCW, it’s estimated about 8,000 of them own bikes here on campus, and making sure they have a safe way to get around is one of the reasons the university earned the bicycle friendly designation.

There are miles of bikes trails, a large number of bicycle spaces and bike lanes on the roadway.
Another reason for the honor? Students can buy bikes and skateboards on campus and even have them custom detailed.

“Doing custom paints gives a little unique taste, so not everyone is out there with similar bikes I think the students really like that a lot,” UNCW junior Jonathan Adams said.

UNCW’s designation as a Bike Friendly University is current for four years. The grant that accompanies the honor will help fund bicycle-related projects on campus.

The only other school in North Carolina to receive the bicycle friendly designation is UNC Greensboro.
