Construction of KB Ocean Front Park underway, not without hiccups

KURE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — The construction in Kure Beach for its new Ocean Front Park is finally underway, but not without a few hiccups. Mayor Dean Lambeth says when it is all said and done, the small beach town will have a new place to relax and mingle.

“This should be the renaissance for the entire downtown section of Kure Beach,” said Lambeth. “This is going to be the starting point to give the public some facilities they have never had before.”

The project, located on Atlantic Avenue, will include public restrooms, a playground and pavilion. The new space has been many years in the making and about $4 million from the town and grants for its development.

The latest construction has been replacing the boardwalk with a new and improved walkway.

“We have removed the benches, we’re lowering the fence, replacing the boardwalk in its entirety,” said Lambeth. We’re also going to have five bump out areas, which will have ada accessible ocean front swings.”

A dune infiltration system is also being installed in the space, which will be the fourth of its kind in the town. The mayor says so far Kure Beach is the first community in the state to have the technology.

“It has proved to be 97 percent effective at removing all contaminants that go through the storm water system and then we can vacuum out all the large particles that would end up on the beach,” he said.

However, the project has not been without issues. There was a hiccup in the construction of the 3,500 square foot pavilion. Lambeth says the concrete slabs were not poured correctly and will have to be fixed at the builder’s expense. He hopes it does not delay the project, which expects to be completed in March.

A public forum will be held at 5:30 tonight at city hall in Kure Beach to decide what the builder will do to fix the pavilion’s construction problem.
