New Hanover Co. Schools gets new website
WILMINGTON, NC (NEWS RELEASE) — New Hanover County Schools has launched its updated website with a completely redesigned new look. The front page of the website is cleaner, brighter and is conveniently organized into four tabs – Students, Parents, Community, Employees – to make it easier for site visitors to find information.
NHCS Superintendent Dr. Tim Markley charged the Technology and Public Relations departments with creating a new look for the website shortly after his arrival in 2010. Given the current budget restrictions, staff opted to make the changes internally instead of hiring an outside website design firm. Since May, the departments have met with a focus group comprised of parents, students, community members and employees to gather feedback on what was needed to improve the website.
Parents and students made many suggestions for improvements including spelling out all education acronyms such as AYP, ABCs, AIG, etc. and to provide daily updates on events in the district. Community members requested that information on the schools be made easier to find and employees stated that having the latest updates from the Board of Education, superintendent and Human Resources are primary concerns for them.
Dolores McLean from Technology, who serves as the district’s webmaster, created the new template based on the feedback from the focus group and the various NHCS departments.
Final tweaks to the website are still in progress and the district is still gathering public feedback on our Facebook page. Once the website is finalized, the Technology and PR departments will collaborate again to focus on improving the schools’ websites. The goal is to make them more uniform so the public will know exactly where to find the most frequently requested information. To view the district’s updated website, please visit: www.nhcs.net.
