Flood insurance issues cause NC officials to write

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Two North Carolina state officials want flood insurance claims adjusters to return to areas damaged by
Hurricane Irene to ensure home and business inspections are performed adequately so claims can be paid quickly.

State Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin and Bob Etheridge – Gov. Bev Perdue’s adviser on the hurricane recovery – wrote to
the National Flood Insurance Program, which is under the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Etheridge and Goodwin said they’ve received complaints that adjusters from the program and private insurers aren’t doing a good job and in some cases failed to evaluate claims or follow up.

Etheridge said Tuesday the letter dated last Friday came as displeasure reached a boiling point during a Tyrrell County town
hall meeting.

FEMA didn’t immediately have a response to the letter Tuesday afternoon.
