As holidays approach, seasonal jobs a welcome gift to many

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — It’s hard to believe, but it already starting to look a lot like Christmas… at least when you go shopping.

The holidays are still weeks away, but many business are already preparing for them. And for those looking for a job, now is a better time than any to find a temporary job.

Every year around this time, the job market gets a slight boost. Businesses needing an extra hand to help with the holiday crowds look to hire temporary workers.

“They can’t wait until Black Friday to put someone to work,” said Walker Biggs, director of the Employment Security Commission office in Wilmington.

Biggs says the number of jobs available this year is about the same as last year.

“They may have already picked people, but we are still getting positions posted on a regular basis,” he said.

With unemployment in the Wilmington area at 10.2 percent, some jobless say they will take anything they can get, even if that means temporary work.

“I’ll take a seasonal job, because they seem to be pretty hot right now,” Dean Darbonne said. “It’s better than nothing.”

“People are at a time of pretty much desperation, and they are willing to do whatever they need to do,” jobseeker Tony Young said.

The continued high level of unemployment has also created a rise in those hoping to hold on to their seasonal job.

“We are seeing more people looking for permanent positions,” JCPenney store manager Tom Saffron said.

“The trick these days is actually getting hired and showing what you can do in the position that they put you in, and that could ultimately lead to other avenues within the company,” Young said.

Saffron says there is always a chance temporary workers can be hired full time. It would be a welcome gift for many this holiday season.

Biggs suggests anyone looking for a seasonal job start early and look at every resource out there, including means online job sites, newspapers and company websites.
