City reviews restrictive sign ordinance
WILMINGTON NC (WWAY) — The centerpiece of the Wilmington City council meeting was the sign ordinance that has downtown business owners down right mad.
The rules are not new, the sign ordinance has been in effect since 2008, but it was only this past August that enforcement started to pressure storefronts in the central business district to comply with the requirements.
After a heated meeting last week, council staff researched other cities and found that ours is pretty restrictive.
John Sharkey owns a business downtown and feels the city is doing a good job of considering local business input. “ I think tonight’s action is pretty good because it allows more time for the staff to come up with other options and hopefully all the store owners will be happy and the ones that want to put up a lot of signs and cover 99% of their store windows might have a chance and those that fell like only 10% those might have a chance.”
City council has directed their staff will seek further input and resolve questions defining coverage, the definition of signs and areas other than downtown.
Staff will make a presentation to city council at the next meeting on November 15.
