BREAKING ONLY ON 3: Training & Standards audit leads to Leland police officer relieved of duty
LELAND, NC (WWAY) – A North Carolina Training and Standards audit of the Leland Police Department shows that the department had 89 training deficiences, one of which has led to the dismissal of Office John Blasingame.
The audit says Blasingame was listed on the 2009 In-Service Compliance Report as deficient because he didn’t complete Mandatory In-Service Training due to his military commitment. When it got that information, Training & Standards requested copies of Blasingame’s military orders. When it received them, Director Wayne Woodard granted Blasingame a military waiver in April, 2010.
But, the audit says Training & Standards has not received Blasingame’s Duty Request nor proof that he completed his 2009 Mandatory In-Service Training when he returned.
Training & Standards told Chief Tim Jayne that Blasingame is, “NOT authorized to perform any law enforcement duties until duly authorized to do so by the Criminal Justice Standards Division. Officer Blasingame must be relieved of his (duty) immediately.”
The audit says before Blasingame can return to work, he must complete his 2009 Mandatory In-Service Training as well as submit all required paperwork which then has to be approved first by the Training & Standards Director.
We called Leland Town Attorney John Wessell recently to ask him about Blasingame’s employment status. He denied that Blasingame’s status had ever changed, even though Training & Standards had sent him home.
