Firefighters treated for injuries in Kinston plant fire

KINSTON, N.C. (AP) — A Kinston textile plant threatened to burn
for a long time as workers drag away bales of cotton before they
turn into fuel.

The fire at Kinston Fibers erupted before dawn Wednesday and
lingered past nightfall. Rescue workers weren’t sure if anyone was
working in the cotton processing plant when the fire ignited.

Three firefighters were treated for minor injuries and released
from a hospital.

A Kinston Public Safety spokesman did not respond to messages
from The Associated Press seeking information.

Kinston Fire and Rescue assistant chief Don Crawford says the
building is full of 1,000-pound cotton bales and beating the blaze
requires removing them.

The building was the scene of two previous fires this year that
investigators blamed on loose cotton fibers trapped in a handling
system.
