Perdue wants review of NC vehicle inspections

CHARLOTTE, NC (AP) — Gov. Bev Perdue has ordered a review of North Carolina’s vehicle inspection program.

Perdue told The Charlotte Observer the state should consider exempting newer cars and trucks from the program because those vehicles are still under warranty.

A review by the newspaper and The News & Observer of Raleigh found many garages that inspect vehicles pass unsafe cars or do unnecessary repairs.

Davidson Sen. Stan Bingham says he would support a plan to exclude vehicles no more than 4 years old from inspection requirements.

Perdue says she wants the Division of Motor Vehicles to conduct a detailed review of the program that the agency oversees.

North Carolina requires most vehicles to have brakes, windshield wipers and other parts checked. South Carolina dropped a similar program years ago.
