Fundraising extends NC Governor’s School for 2012

RALEIGH, NC (AP) – A program for gifted students in North Carolina will go on next summer after receiving gifts from alumni and other donors.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported the North Carolina Governor’s School Foundation has raised more than $520,000.

The program has suffered from budget reductions as lawmakers have struggled with less revenue.

Officials say the money that has been raised will allow the program for high school students to operate at least one of its two locations next year.

The State Board of Education will decide whether to keep open the possibility of operating the second location. That would allow the foundation to continue to seek donations.

The group hopes to raise $1 million to allow the program to fully operate in what would be its 50th year.
