State offers tax break on Energy Star appliances this weekend

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — In today’s economy everybody’s looking to save a few bucks wherever they can. This weekend, you may be able to do that in a big way not only at the store, but also at home on your electric bill.

As shoppers hit the stores this weekend, the Energy Star logo will be the key to savings. The label points out products that are energy efficient and can save you money in your home.

“By getting an Energy Star rated machine, you can actually save up to 50 percent on your energy savings,” said Sabrina Strickland of Lowe’s Home Improvement.

North Carolina is offering up these products tax free this weekend in an attempt to encourage homeowners to cut down on their energy, and water usage.

Energy audit specialist Skye Dunning says a new fridge is the way to go.

“Refrigerators are really the number one (appliance) for energy savings just because they’re on all the time,” Dunning said.

When you’re in the store shopping for any of these big ticket appliances, you want to make sure you look for one thing. If you open some of the doors, you’ll find an energy guide. It tells you how much energy the machine uses and how much it’s going to cost you per year. But just switching out your appliances at home isn’t going to turn your house green.

“Appliances are one thing, especially the refrigerator, but really the most energy savings that can be had in the house is really due to heating and cooling,” Dunning said.

Dunning says having your home completely air sealed is the biggest step you can take to chop your energy bill. But this weekend, you can definitely take that first step at the store.

“You’re talking about saving money, saving time, saving energy, water,” Strickland said. “It’s a big win all across the board. There will be a lot more foot traffic; hopefully a lot more sales.”

The tax free holiday runs through Sunday night at stores throughout North Carolina.
