‘Blue Velvet’ photo exhibit opens

WILMINGTON NC (WWAY) — The film “Blue Velvet” was made in Wilmington 25 years ago, and it helped put the Port City on the movie map.

The dark David Lynch drama was set throughout the city, and the part of lead mad man Frank Booth was perfect for Dennis Hopper. Now a cult classic, “Blue Velvet” is being honored with an exhibit of memorabilia and photographs from the production.

The display is in the apartment where Hopper lived during the filming, and the photos capture the cast on and off the movie set.

“The photographs come form Peter Braatz, who was a German film student who Lynch invited to Wilmington simply for the purpose of documenting the production, and he took close to 1,000 black and white stills behind the scenes and created a documentary called, ‘No Frank in Lumberton,’ which will be played in the Cucalorus film festival this week,” said Steve Fox, who put the exhibit together.

Braatz will be at the exhibit, and just in case you missed the movie, “Blue Velvet” is playing at the display, which is at 20 Princess St. in downtown Wilmington. You can catch the exhibition now through Sunday.
