Space being added at Salisbury National Cemetery

SALISBURY, NC (AP) — Construction at the Salisbury National Cemetery will allow more veterans and their families to be buried there.

The Salisbury Post reports that that construction begins Monday on the project, which includes a 1,000-niche columbarium and 2,400 pre-placed in-ground crypts.

The work should be completed within the next year.

Director John Spruyt says the construction company is on site Monday to start moving in equipment.

A columbarium stores cremation urns, which are placed in niches behind covers along a memorial wall. The cemetery has a smaller columbarium but will run out of space in the next six to seven months.

Spruyt says most national cemeteries now use in-ground pre-placed crypts to save space and time. Those are vaults buried under 18 inches of topsoil.
