Cape Fear Academy names new headmaster

WILMINGTON, NC (NEWS RELEASE) — Cape Fear Academy is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Donald S. Berger, as the new Head of School, effective July 1, 2012. Mr. Berger is currently Head of School at Cary Academy in Cary, North Carolina. Mr. Berger will succeed Mr. John B. Meehl, Headmaster of Cape Fear Academy since 2002, who is retiring.

Chairman of the Cape Fear Academy Board of Trustees, Bill Squire, made the announcement to the school community today. Mr. Squire said, “We are pleased to announce, after an extensive nationwide search, the appointment of Don Berger to the position of Head of School. He has the unique combination of leadership skills and experience to help us continue providing our community with a growing and dynamic college preparatory educational environment. Cape Fear Academy has a 45-year history of excellence, and Mr. Berger brings the skills to CFA that will fuel the growth of our school and the exceptional education we offer our students.” Immediate past chairman of the board, Dail Ballard, served as Chair of the Search Committee.

Mr. Berger received a B.A. from Haverford College (PA) and holds a Masters in Education in Administration, Planning, and Public Policy from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. He has served as Head of School at Cary Academy since 1996, its inaugural year. Cary Academy, a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence and well known for its innovative use of technology, was able to reach full enrollment of 735 students under the direction of Mr. Berger. Prior to coming to Cary, Mr. Berger was Head of Upper School and Dean of Students at Manlius Pebble Hill School in DeWitt, NY. His previous experience was as a teacher and coach at Moses Brown School (RI). He will be joined at Cape Fear Academy by his wife, Heidi, and daughter, Anna, a rising first grader. The Bergers also have three daughters and a son who all attend college or work in Wake County.

“I am extremely excited to become Cape Fear Academy’s next Head of School,” Berger said. “I look forward to building on John Meehl’s remarkable accomplishments to advance Cape Fear Academy even further. Working with an outstanding Board, a dedicated faculty, and a loyal parent group, I am confident that we can strengthen current programs, develop new, powerfully engaging and inspiring programs, and grow Cape Fear Academy’s enrollment.”

Mr. Berger will be on the campus of Cape Fear Academy on Thursday, November 17 when he will address the student body, staff, alumni, and parents at an assembly at 2 PM
