Teacher killed in car accident

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)– A New Hanover county teacher was killed in a car accident last night, according to school spokeswoman Valita Quattlebaum.

It happened on North College Road near Laney high school. The Highway Patrol says the preliminary investigation shows that around 9:40 p.m. Monday Michael Gillespie crossed the center line and hit Linda Aiello, who was traveling north. After that accident another vehicle also hit Aiello’s car.

Aiello, 62, and a third grade teacher at Wrightsboro Elementary, died in the crash. She had been with New Hanover County schools since August 1989.

Aiello leaves behind a daughter and two grandchildren.

Counselors are at the school today to speak with staff and students.
