Governor discusses college plan during visit to Laney

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — During her tour through southeastern North Carolina Tuesday, Gov. Bev Perdue made a stop at Laney High School to sell her new educational program.

The governor recently launched the “Career and College Promise.” It lets high school students get a head start on a college education. Students can earn tuition-free course credits at community colleges, which can go toward a four-year degree.

“I think it’s a great way to kind of explore what you might want to do in high school when it’s free versus when you go to college when you’re paying $400 a credit on your parents’ dime or your own hard earned dime,” parent Stephanie Kraybill said. “You don’t know what you want to do, so it’s a good way to narrow down your choices.”

The governor talked to several students while visiting two classrooms. She also took questions from parents.
