FIRST ON 3: Clerk makes good on promise to defend store, shoots would-be robber
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A would-be armed robber found out the hard way one Wilmington convenience store clerk was not kidding when he said he would be ready the next time someone tried to steal from him.
Wilmington Police say a robber walked into the Wrightsville County Store on Wrightsville Avenue before noon with a gun. That’s when clerk Mark Headstrong pulled out a gun of his own and shot the suspect. Paramedics took the suspect to the hospital.
Wrightsville County Store was one of several targets last month in a string of convenience store robberies by a man in a Spider-Man mask. After being victimized by that masked robber, Headstrong said he would be better prepared for future threats.
“I now have heavier tools, I would say,” Headstrong told WWAY October 17. “If they would do that they are going to be shot or we get shot. I don’t know how to express this. Somebody is going to be hurt.”
Today, someone did. No word on who the suspect is or his condition.
Forest Hills Elementary School was on lockdown for a short time after the robbery as a precaution.
