Jacksonville will revise rules after abortion foes sue

JACKSONVILLE, NC (AP) — The city of Jacksonville will change its rules on public demonstrations to resolve a lawsuit filed by anti-abortion protesters who say their free-speech rights are violated by the current ordinance.

The decision comes after a Monday ruling by US District Court Judge Terrence Boyle granting a temporary injunction against the ordinance.

City spokesman Glenn Hargett told The Daily News of Jacksonville that the current ordinance will be revised. The current ordinance requires a police permit for protests that involve three or more people.

City officials had denied the protesters a permit to picket a clinic where abortions are performed, saying the area was unsafe because it lacked sidewalks.

The Thomas More Society filed the lawsuit on behalf of protesters and says the decision is a victory for free speech.
