Hundreds burn calories in Turkey Trot
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Hundreds of people gathered at Wrightsville Beach Park this morning to burn off some calories before putting them on with their Thanksgiving meal.
At eight o’clock Thursday morning, hundreds of runners and walkers came together this Thanksgiving to support Habitat for Humanity by taking part in the 7th Annual Turkey Trot Run and Walk.
While there may be some serious runners in the crowd there are dozens of families as well. One happy group had four generations participating.
“We have my grandmother my mom and dad, my sister and my two kids,” Jennifer Robbins said. We decided to make this part of our new Thanksgiving tradition.”
Jennifer Robbins is from Winnabow, her mom Bobbi is from Goldsboro and her grandmother Kelsie is from West Virginia. All were excited for the Turkey Trot.
Robbins said, “I thought it was a good idea. If you are going to eat so much on Thanksgiving to get out and go run before hand.”
As for the youngest generation in the bunch, Laney Robbins said, “ I think it’s going to be very fun.”
Before we could ask little Laney anymore questions it was time for the race!
Runners and walkers of all ages quickly left the gate but it did not take long to see participants come back, including Kelsie and Bobbi, who were feeling good.
And while it may feel great to come in first at the Turkey Trot, even the winner of the race knows it’s all about family on Thanksgiving.
First place runner, Mark Kauffman, said, “It’s fun and it’s for a good cause and it’s turkey day so get out here with your family and have fun with it.”
And that’s what many families did Thursday morning, have fun. Making the Turkey Trot more than a race but a family tradition.
