Black Friday shoppers scour Wilmington stores for best deals

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Thousands lined up outside stores like Target, Best Buy and J-C Penney in
Wilmington today, all in hopes of scoring some bargains on Black Friday.

Several of the businesses tried to lure even more customers in this year, opening their doors a little earlier. Target opened its doors at midnight this year, which meant people lined up even earlier to get their hands on bargains.

“Everybody was like, ‘Oh this kind of TV, do you have this? Where’s this at?’” said Sarah McDevitt, a Target employee. “So we were all just trying to direct traffic. This is where it’s going, this is where it’s at, so overall it was kind of overwhelming, but it was pretty peaceful.”

TVs were a big ticket item at Target and Tiffany Andrews, like hundreds of others had her eyes set on a flat screen. When the doors opened Andrews said people went nuts.

“Where were two girls, one grabbed the box at one end, one grabbed the other end and they were literally standing in the middle of the aisle,” she said. “Each was holding the end of a box and they would not let it go.”

The Independence Mall parking lot was nearly full Friday morning. Belk opened its doors at 3 a.m. and JC Penney opened up 30 minutes later. One seasoned Black Friday shopper at the mall says this year has been way more hectic than years past

“I’ve been doing Black Friday for 15 years and this has been the worst,” said Shani Dilena. “I think it’s because they opened four hours earlier and everybody seems to find it easier to do it at 12 instead of getting up and going at four.”

More than 150 million Americans are expected to shop over Black Friday weekend.
