ONLY ON 3: Parents of hit and run victim plead for driver to come forward

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The NC Highway Patrol is still looking for the driver of a vehicle that struck and seriously injured 22-year-old Joseph Earl Jones, Jr. on the southbound side of Carolina Beach Road late Thursday night.

Trooper Phillips says Jones was hit sometime between 11:16 and 11:54 p.m. Thursday while crossing Carolina Beach Road near Monkey Junction Storage. He was wearing a royal blue long sleeve pullover.

Jones is currently in critical condition at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Jones’ mother, Tammy, says he had driven from Leland to visit his girlfriend and was walking back to her house from Wal-Mart when he was hit.

He has several broken bones, suffered internal bleeding, a collapsed lung and needs multiple surgeries.

“It’s a wakeup call to see my son when I just saw him hours earlier and to see him unrecognizable,” said Joseph Jones Sr.

Joseph has a son of his own, two year-old Jessiah. Tammy is afraid he may not see his father again. She doesn’t understand how someone could just drive away.

“If you can stand there and look at my son and have no mercy, I just want to know what kind of person you are,” she said.

Both parents say they hope whoever hit their son will turn themselves in.

“Come forward,” Tammy Jones said. “Come forward and take responsibility for what you have done.”

Joseph is scheduled to have surgery Monday morning for his fractured pelvis.

Highway Patrol is looking for a 1995 Chevrolet pickup, Tahoe or Suburban with damage to the front right side. They hope that with so many shoppers out that someone saw something.

Anyone with information is urged to call Trooper Phillips at (910) 392-3918 or (800) 334-7411.
