Cooper cautions NC residents on cyber shopping

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Cyber Monday, a day when online retailers offer deals to holiday shoppers, is becoming increasingly popular, but North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper is warning that convenience doesn’t come without risks.

Cooper says shoppers should stick to established websites, and that if an online seller seems unfamiliar, the state Consumer Protection Division might have useful information about them. The Better Business Bureau is another source to see if any complaints have been filed about Internet retailers.

The attorney general says people buying gifts online should also use credit cards to make their purchases. Federal law limits individual liability to $50 if a credit card number gets stolen, and shoppers can dispute unauthorized charges with their credit card company.
