McIntyre pushing Congress to honor veterans who continue service in community

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Rep. Mike McIntyre (D-7th District) was in Wilmington this afternoon to talk new legislation, and he thinks it’s an issue everyone in Congress should be able to come together on.

McIntyre was in town to honor our veterans. He says he’s taking the tribute a step farther and attempting to create the Veterans Distinguished Public Service Award.

Bud Sweetman of Sunset Beach was the first to receive the award McIntyre hopes will go national.

Sweetman served in Europe during World War II. In the decades since, he has served the community in countless ways including donating nearly 40 gallons of blood to the American Red Cross.

McIntyre says in times like these, when Congress cannot seem to agree on anything, he thinks leaders should come together to support those who have served our country.

“Just as our community shows their appreciation, we want to show that appreciation on the national level,” McIntyre said, “and I feel like, United States Congress, this is something that with all the other bickering going on and disputes about other things, we can stand together in honoring our veterans and honoring our military, and we certainly should do it.”

McIntyre has introduced the bill in the House of Representatives to establish the Department of Veterans Affairs Medal for Distinguished Public Service. He hopes it will become law soon.

Sweetman says he plans to continue to give blood and help in any way he can, because he says that’s what patriots do.
