Pastor charged with sex offenses a no-show at church
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Pastor Thomas Wiggins was arrested last week after being charged with multiple sex crimes, including indecent liberties with a minor. Today was the first Sunday service at his church since the alleged crimes came to light.
Following the two-hour Sunday service at The Faith Temple Church of God in Christ both the congregation and officials of the church did not want to talk about the situation surrounding their pastor.
The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office says Wiggins was arrested last week for multiple sex offenses, including five counts of first degree sexual offense and five counts of indecent liberties with a minor. Investigators say the incidents date back to 1998.
One member of the church did tell us off camera that despite being bonded out of jail, Wiggins was not at church Sunday. The reasoning behind his absence is unknown.
We spoke with a friend of Wiggins on Wednesday.
“We were all in shock,” says Linwood Nesbitt. “We don’t know any of the details or specifics so we’re just holding everyone in prayer.”
In his first appearance in court last Wednesday the Assistant District Attorney told the judge that Wiggins confessed.
The A.D.A. did not tell us the details of the confession.
Despite the controversy, Wiggins is still listed as the pastor of The Faith Temple Church of God in Christ on their website and on the marquee outside the church. He is also still listed as the pastor of the Bolton Church of God and Christ in Columbus County.
Wiggins is due back in court December 15th.
