NC ag commissioner Troxler to run for re-election

GREENSBORO, NC (AP) — Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler wants to oversee North Carolina’s largest industry for another four years.

Troxler announced Monday at a North Carolina Farm Bureau meeting in Greensboro he would seek re-election in 2012.

The Guilford County Republican and farmer says there needs to be a steady hand in charge of the Department of Agriculture during the uncertain economy and in the aftermath of natural disasters. Troxler narrowly won the 2004 race over Democrat Britt Cobb and got re-elected in 2008 with 52 percent of the vote.

Chatham County cattle farmer and former sheriff’s deputy Scott Bryant announced in October he would seek the Democratic nomination for commissioner.

North Carolina agriculture contributes more than $74 billion the state’s economy annually.
