NC House leader: school year change short-lived

MATTHEWS, NC (AP) — One of North Carolina’s top legislative leaders says he thinks the General Assembly will overturn a new law that adds five days to the public school calendar without any extra money.

The Charlotte Observer reported Tuesday that House Speaker Thom Tillis told a gathering in the Charlotte suburb of Matthews that the odds are 70 percent or 80 percent that the school-year extension will be changed.

The Mecklenburg County Republican says the change could come with revisions to the state budget during the legislature session that starts in May.

The extended classroom calendar to take effect next fall has generated complaints from school districts statewide because they would have to pay for five extra days of school bus fuel and classroom utilities despite state spending cuts.
