Pearl Harbor survivors group: We will disband

Associated Press

PEARL HARBOR, HI (AP) — An association of Pearl Harbor survivors founded in 1958 has announced they will be disbanding at the end of the month.

Pearl Harbor Survivors Association President William Muehleib made the announcement during a speech Wednesday commemorating the 70th anniversary of the bombing. He cited the age and poor health of remaining members. He thanked the executive board for its courage in reaching the decision.

The announcement comes as about 120 survivors of the bombing of Pearl Harbor observed a moment of silence to commemorate the Japanese attack and the thousands who lost their lives on Dec. 7, 1941.

The moment of silence came just before 8 a.m., when the first Japanese planes launched their attack.
