Whiteville remembers McGlockton as more than just gridiron great
WHITEVILLE, NC (WWAY) — Family and friends gathered in Whiteville today to pay final respects to football great Chester McGlockton. The 42-year-old died last week in California, where he was an assistant coach at Stanford University.
As a high school football star, McGlockton led the 1987 Whiteville Wolfpack to a state championship. He went on to star at Clemson and in the NFL, where he was a four-time Pro Bowl selection.
To the people of Whiteville, McGlockton was much more than a football player.
“I have so many fond memories of Chester,” friend Glenn McKoy said. “The one that sticks out more than anything else is the way that everyone loved being around him. He was not only a giant of a man, but he had a giant heart, and everyone could see it and could feel the love beaming from him.”
McGlockton is survived by his wife Zina and their two daughters.
