Necropsy planned for whale washed up on Carolina Beach
CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Crowds of people gathered in Carolina Beach last night, all wanting to catch a glimpse of a 15-foot whale that washed up on shore. The animal was found around 9:30 p.m. near the Carolina Beach Boardwalk.
Aquarium officials believe it is a sub-adult minke whale.
Dozens of people dropped by to see the dead whale with their own eyes. A perimeter was put up around the animal preventing anyone from getting too close.
Officials say the whale could have died from disease despite the apparent shark bites.
“We definitely have confirmed some shark interaction with this animal,” said Paul Barrington from the NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher. “Whether this is the cause of death, it is still to early to tell. It may be some natural causes for the death of this animal: disease, boat strike. It is just to early to tell.”
The minke whale was not moved overnight. Officials plan to perform a necropsy later this morning.
