Leland settles claim from another police officer

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — Two settlements within three months and seven officers all gone from the Leland Police Department in a matter of a year. The numbers just don’t seem to add up in Leland.

The Town of Leland settled yet another claim against the town from a Leland Police officer at Thursday night’s special council meeting. The settlement says officer Kevin Foss will resign as an employee, the claim he filed will be dismissed and the records concerning the situation will be sealed.

“A lot of people have resigned,” incoming Leland Town Manager David Hollis said. “There’s approximately 30 people in the department. Seven of 30 is a good percentage. That is concerning.”

Hollis says information about the claim cannot be released because it concerns personnel.

“I can’t really talk too much about what’s going on in the police department personnel wise,” he said.

When we asked Hollis if anything that we had reported so far about the Leland Police Department was untrue, he struggled to answer.

“That’s a good question,” Hollis said.

After months of denying to interview with us, Leland Mayor-Elect Brenda Bozeman says she still had many questions about the situation herself.

“I can’t deny it or I can’t… I can’t either way,” Bozeman said.

Bozeman says the problem council has come across while trying to find the truth is that there are so many different stories from different people. She says the council is waiting on the results from the SBI investigation requested earlier this year to come back before moving forward.

For now, Bozeman says she will continue to trust the police department and Police Chief Tim Jayne until she is told otherwise.

“As of right now, I have no reason not to unless something comes back,” Bozeman said.

We tried to talk to Foss about the settlement, but he said he was prohibited by the terms of the agreement with the town to talk to any media about the claim or any other issue involving the Leland Police Department.
