Police not sure where, why NHHS student shot near campus

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — New Hanover High School was placed on lockdown this afternoon after a shooting near campus.

Wilmington Police say a New Hanover High senior was shot in the leg near the school and was taken to the hospital. Police are still trying to figure out exactly where the shooting happened and just what happened to send a young woman to the hospital and close down the school.

Investigators believe the shooting happened on 12th Street between Princess and Chestnut Streets around 1 p.m. Police say they have not found any witnesses and do not even have a specific crime scene.

New Hanover High Principal Todd Finn says the school went into lockdown immediately after hearing about the incident. He says his staff does everything in its power to keep students safe, but it can only protect the students that show up for class.

“Beyond our walls and beyond our sidewalks there’s not much we can do, so we want to emphasize to our kids that you want to be in class, you want to be in school, because we exhaust every effort to ensure your safety while you’re here,” Finn said. “Once you make that decision to not come to school on a particular day, we really can’t help you, and I think that’s why it’s so important to be in school.”

Finn says the school was only under lockdown for a matter of minutes, but teachers remained vigilant throughout the school day.

Police say the student did not call police and had a friend drive her to the hospital. Hospital staff then notified police.

The name of the student has not been released.
